Yingkou is best known as a coastal city on the northeastern shore of Liaodong Bay. In central southern Liaoning, it covers 5,502 square kilometres and had a population of 2,328,582 in the 2020 census. Its neighbours include Dalian, Anshan and Panjin, while Jinzhou and Huludao sit across the bay.
