Yanji serves as the political, economic and cultural center of Jilin’s Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. A significant share of its roughly 400,000 residents are ethnic Korean, adding to the city’s distinctive regional character. It is also a busy transport and trade link between China and North Korea, and home to Yanbian University, the city’s only Project 211 university.
