Country: Italy Trento serves as the capital of Italy’s autonomous province of Trento, in the northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. The Adige River runs through the city, which became the setting for the Council of Trent in the 16th century. Once part of Austria and Austria-Hungary, it joined Italy in 1919 and now ranks as the Alps’ third-largest municipality and the historical Tyrol’s second largest.
