Samsun is home to an opera house, several hospitals, three large shopping malls and Samsunspor football club. This major Black Sea port on Turkey’s north coast is also the capital of Samsun Province, with an urban population of 738,692 recorded in 2022. Most famously, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk began the Turkish War of Independence here in 1919.
