Country: Peru Puno’s colonial churches preserve a story that reaches back centuries, serving Spanish residents while missionaries sought to evangelize the Quechua people. Founded in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro, the city first carried the name San Juan Bautista de Puno before being renamed San Carlos de Puno in honour of Spain’s King Charles II. Today, Puno is the capital of its region and province on the shore of Lake Titicaca.
