Niigata is the capital and largest city of Niigata Prefecture, with a government ordinance designation in Japan. Facing the Sea of Japan and Sado Island, it is the most populous city on Honshu’s west coast and the Chūbu region’s second largest after Nagoya. Greater Niigata forms a metropolitan employment area with a GDP of US$43.3 billion as of 2010.
