Residents of Newcastle have the distinctive nickname Novocastrians, while the city itself is often called Newy. Also known as Greater Newcastle, this major metropolitan area includes Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and serves as the centre of New South Wales’ Lower Hunter region, stretching across parts of Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens Council.
