Country: Canada Montreal is Quebec’s largest city and Canada’s second-largest, with a scale that makes it one of North America’s major urban centres. Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, or “City of Mary,” it later took its name from Mount Royal, the triple-peaked mountain at the heart of the original settlement. Most of the city spreads across the Island of Montreal, alongside smaller islands including Île Bizard.
