Country: United Kingdom The second most populous district in the United Kingdom includes Leeds, Yorkshire’s largest settlement and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough. Built around the River Aire among the eastern foothills of the Pennines, it grew from a small medieval manorial borough into a market town, then a major production and trading centre during the 17th and 18th centuries. Queen Victoria granted Leeds city status in 1893.
