Founded in 1755, Laredo grew from a small village into the capital of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande and a major inland port on the Mexican border. On the north bank of the Rio Grande across from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, the Texas city thrives on international trade, with land, rail and air cargo at its core. Four international bridges, two railway bridges and its position at the southern end of Interstate 35 make it a key link between northern Mexico and the wider United States.
