Kobe is Japan’s third-largest port city, following Tokyo and Yokohama, with a population of around 1.5 million. In the Kansai region on Honshū’s northern Osaka Bay shore, it forms part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area alongside Osaka and Kyoto. The city centre is about 35 km west of Osaka and 70 km southwest of Kyoto.
