Established in 1968, the city grew to support Hamersley Iron’s mining workforce and later the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Venture’s petroleum and liquefied natural gas operations. In Western Australia’s Pilbara region, adjoining the port of Dampier, Karratha takes its name from a cattle station and possibly connects to Gardarra, a sacred whale site in the area.
