Hạ Long Bay gives the city its defining character, with much of Hạ Long stretching along its shores. The city was formed in 1993 when the former capital, Hòn Gai, merged with Bãi Cháy, the area’s main tourist hub. Hạ Long serves as the capital of Quảng Ninh province and is about 178 kilometres east of Hà Nội.
