Country: Bahamas Freeport is best known as a free trade zone on Grand Bahama, combining city and district status in the northwestern Bahamas. Its development began in 1955, when financier Wallace Groves received 20,000 hectares of pine forest, swamp and scrubland to help build the local economy. Today, it is the Bahamas’ second-most populous city.
