South Africa’s only river port gives East London a distinctive place on the Indian Ocean coast. Officially known as KuGompo City since February 2026, it stretches largely between the Buffalo and Nahoon rivers in the Eastern Cape. More than 267,000 people lived in the city in 2011, while the surrounding metropolitan area had over 755,000 residents.
