Durban ranks as South Africa’s third-most populous city and the largest in KwaZulu-Natal. Along the country’s east coast, it faces the Indian Ocean at Natal Bay and runs one of sub-Saharan Africa’s busiest ports, once known as Port Natal. The Umgeni River reaches the sea north of the harbour, while the city centre climbs toward the Berea hills and the Bluff stretches along the southern coast.
