At 1,040 metres above sea level, Datong rises from a broad basin in northern Shanxi Province. The city borders Inner Mongolia to the north and west, with Hebei to the east. In 2020, its prefecture-level area had 3,105,591 residents, including 1,790,452 people in the built-up area formed by Pingcheng and Yungang districts.
