Brest is best known as an important harbour and France’s second-largest military port after Toulon. Sheltered by a bay near the western tip of Brittany, it forms the region’s largest metropolitan area and serves around one million people across Western Brittany. Though it is Finistère’s biggest city, the department’s administrative capital is the much smaller Quimper.
