Berlin is one of Germany’s states, and its compact area makes it the country’s third-smallest. Home to 3.7 million people, it has more residents within its city boundaries than any other European Union city. Beyond the city, the Berlin-Brandenburg region reaches around 6.2 million people and ranks among the EU’s largest metropolitan economies, while Berlin itself thrives as a centre for culture, politics, media and science.
