Country: China Anqing is best known as the birthplace of Chen Duxiu, a founding figure of the Chinese Communist Party who served as its first General Secretary from 1921 to 1928. The city in southwest Anhui province also gave rise to Huangmei opera, a celebrated Chinese opera style that became widely popular from the 1950s through the talent of local performers. This art form remains a defining part of Anqing’s cultural heritage.
